Skill Development Training Program on Production of Value Added Fishery Products

Four days skill development training program was conducted on the topic “Production of value added Fishery products” for the fisher folk of Karaikal along with the Agricultural Technology Management Agency of Karaikal, who also sponsored for this training section during 11 th June 2019 to 14 th June 2019 at Fish Processing Incubation Facility, College of Fisheries Engineering, TNJFU, Nagapattinam.

The skill development program was inaugurated by chief guest Mr. P. Mohamed Dasir, Project Director, ATMA, Karaikal. The Felicitation address was given by Mr. R. Kaviarasan, Deputy Director of Fisheries, Karaikal in which he spoke about the scope that are available in the fisheries sector. Following the felicitation address, the Presidential address was given my Dr. K. Rathnakumar, who spoke about the business opportunities that are present in this field and also about the necessity of value added products. During the chief guest address, he encouraged the trainees to take this opportunity to learn the fish processing and value added technologies. Followed by Vote of Thanks from Er. Hozen Ricchie Rose A for inaugural function.

Fisherfolks were taught about scope and nutritional value of seafood products and the scope of various value added fishery products, manufacture of fish powder, hands on training on hygienic handling of fishes, retort processing of fish and prawn curry, production of bakery products (fish incorporated cake, fish incorporated cookies), production of dry fish products (salted dry fish, masala coated dry fish), production of extruded products (fish corn puff and fish pasta), production of fish and prawn pickles, fish incorporated ice cream, battered fish products etc. Trainees were also exposed to the various fish processing machinery and packaging techniques.

Valedictory session was headed by Dr. R. Rajendran, Dean, College of Fisheries Engineering. Trainees were given feedback that they have gained lot of knowledge on how to manufacture the fish products in various methods that would be both attractive to the children and the customers. She wants to start the seafood products based business near the seashores. During the valedictory function, the training certificates were also distributed to the trainees. Finally the Vote of thanks was given by training coordinator Dr. P. Karthickumar, thanking all the dignitaries, the ATMA for sponsoring and for taking the initiative and efforts.
