The erstwhile Centre of Fisheries Management, Policy and Planning which was created in the year 2015 was renamed as Directorate of Incubation and Vocational Training in Fisheries (DIVF) on 30.09.2019 with view to create technical manpower in the field of Harvesting and Post-harvesting technology for manning Deep Sea Fishing vessels and to work in Fish processing factories. Two Institutes have been established under DIVF namely 'Institute of Industrial Fishing Technology', Ariyaman beach, Ramanathapuram and 'Paraprofessional Institute of Fisheries Technology' Madhavaram, Chennai. These two institutes are offering two vocational degree programmes of UGC namely B.Voc. (Industrial Fishing Technology) and B.Voc. (Industrial Fish Processing Technology) respectively.
Apart from offering vocational degree programmes, DIVF has established two regional centers viz
(i) Centre for Incubation and Vocational Training in Fisheries (CIVF), Thoothukudi and
(ii) Thoothoor Center for Incubation and Vocational Training in Fisheries at Thengapattinam to offer training programmes to fishermen particularly with the objective of encouraging Deep Sea fishing.
The training programmes includes mainly four aspects such as,
(i) Safety of fishermen at Sea,
(ii) Care and Maintenance of Marine engines,
(iii) Responsible fishing techniques,
(iv) Marine electronics and communication
Institute of Industrial Fishing Technology, Ariyaman Beach, Ramanathapuram
TNJFU has established Institute of Industrial Fishing Technology at Ariyaman Beach, Ramanathapuram district to offer a B.Voc. degree programme in Industrial Fishing Technology. B.Voc. (IFT) is a three years (six semesters) degree programme approved by the University Grant Commission, New Delhi with flexible exit options. Specially designed for gaining expertise in Sustainable Fishing Practices, Deep Sea Navigation and Marine Engineering. This degree programme has commenced from the academic year 2019-20.
The Paraprofessional Institute Fisheries Technology was established with the total budget outlay of 5.0 Crore with objectives of creating entrepreneurs in the field of fish processing technology besides creating technical manpower to work in fish processing industries. The institute was established with the financial support from the Govt. of Tamil Nadu vide G. O. (Ms) No.48 dated: 13.03.2018 under 110 an announcement of Legislative Assembly. It has started temporarily functioning from a building at Madhavaram milk campus of TNJFU since October 2018. The institute has all infrastructure and lab equipments to conduct vocational degree programme and hence, B.Voc. (Industrial Fish Processing Technology) approved by UGC was started during the year 2018 with the intake capacity of 25 students per year.
The DIVF has been operating a NADP Scheme on Establishment of Fisheries Training Institute at Mandapam, Ramanathapuram District since 09.11.2017 with a budget outlay of 450 lakh. The scheme has the following objectives:
This centre was created during the year 2018 under the Govt. Tamil Nadu funded scheme entitled "Establishment of Deep Sea Fishing Technology Training and Management Centers at Thoothukudi and Thoothoor” with the total budget outlay of 3.82 Crores. The centre has a training hall and demonstration of Deep sea fishing technology facility to fishermen. The details of accomplishment are briefed as follows:
This centre was created during the year 2018 under the Govt. Tamil Nadu funded scheme entitled "Establishment of Deep Sea Fishing Technology Training and Management Centers at Thoothukudi and Thoothoor” with the total budget outlay of 3.82 Crores. The centre has a training hall and demonstration of Deep sea fishing technology facility to fishermen. It has been recently opened on 29.01.2021. It is proposed to use this centre for facilitating practical onboard training in Deep Sea fishing for fishermen of various maritime district of Tamil Nadu from Deep sea fishing vessels of Thoothoor.
