"Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood"
The Directorate of Incubation and Vocational Training in Fisheries (DIVF), a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University organized a one week on campus training programme on “Deep Sea Fishing from 22.11.2021 to 27.11.2021”. A total of 28 fishermen, of which 23 fishermen from Tharuvaikulam of Thoothukudi district and 5 fishermen from Pudukottai district participated in the programme. The inaugural function was held on 22.11.2021. Mr.T. Ravikumar, Assistant Professor and Head, DFTFE, FC&RI, Thoothukudi welcomed the gathering. Dr.G. Sugumar, Vice Chancellor, TNJFU participated as Chief Guest and graced the occasion. In his Chief Guest address, Vice Chancellor emphasized the need for fishermen to take up technical training on deep sea fishing to ensure the safety at sea by learning usage of Marine Engine maintenance and Navigational equipments. Dr.N. Neethiselvan, Director, DIVF, Ramanathapuram presided over the function. In his presidential address, he explained the role of DIVF in imparting training to fishermen on aspects such as Navigational Chart work, Navigational equipments and Engine maintenance. Mr.R. Amal Xavier, Joint Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, Thoothukudi, Dr.N.V. Sujathkumar, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi and Capt.S. Viswanathan, Dean, College of Nautical Science, Thoothukudi delivered felicitation addresses. Er.M. Sivasudalaimani, Automobile Engineer delivered the vote of thanks. The training programme included various aspects related to Deep sea fishing such as designing and fabrication of deep sea fishing gears, handling of navigational equipments, endangered fish species, seamanship appliances, marine engine repair and maintenance, responsible fishing methods and hygienic handling of fishes onboard the fishing vessel. The scheme investigators and invited subject matter specialists conducted the training programme practical demonstrations on ‘First aid at sea’ and ‘Fire Fighting’ were carried out by a Doctor and team of staff from district Fire officer of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue services, Thoothukudi respectively. The valedictory function of the training programme was held on 27.11.2021. During the valedictory function of Dr.P.S. Asha, Head In-charge, CMFRI Thoothukudi participated as chief guest and distributed the certificates to the trainees
