Training on “Seed Production and Rearing of Striped Murrel (Channa striata)”

Dr. MGR FC&RI, Ponneri, one of the constituent units of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa
Fisheries University, and Tamil Nadu State Land Use Research Board (TNSLURB), under the
State Planning Commission (SPC), organized a one-day training programme on "Seed
Production and Rearing of Striped Murrel (Channa striata)" for farmers on 20.03.2024 at the
Aquatic Rainbow Technology Park (ARTP), TNJFU Madhavaram campus, Chennai. Dr. K.
Ravaneswaran, Professor & Project Officer, ARTP/Director i/c, DIVA & Co-PI of the scheme,
extended a warm welcome to the gathering. The training programme was inaugurated by
Dr. Cheryl Antony, Dean i/c, Dr. MGR FC&RI, Ponneri. A total of 50 participants, including 11
women, attended the training programme.
During the sessions, Dr. Cheryl Antony, Co-PI of the scheme, Dr. K. Ravaneswaran,
Co-PI of the scheme, Dr. Mahadevi, Principal Investigator of the scheme and Mr. M.
Rajiniganth, Farm Manager, ARTP, delivered lectures on various topics such as the present
status and scope for Murrel culture in India, biology and commercially important species of
Murrel, broodstock development, breeding of striped Murrel, and rearing of Murrel (nursery,
fry, and grow-out). Field observations for broodstock maintenance and induced breeding
trials were also demonstrated to the farmers.
During the valedictory function, Dr. K. Ravaneswaran, Professor & Project Officer,
ARTP/Director i/c, DIVA, Muttukadu, delivered the valedictory address and distributed
certificates to the participants. Some participants also provided feedback on the training
programme. Dr. Mahadevi, Assistant Professor & Principal Investigator of the scheme,
delivered the vote of thanks.
