Dr.M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute

Dr.M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute has been established at Thalainayeru, Nagapattinam District with the financial outlay of Rs.6816.78 lakhs for 5 years. Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has announced under Rule 110 of Legislative Assembly, a new FC&RI under Tamil Nadu Dr.J.Jayalalithaa Fisheries University by considering the need for technical manpower for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Tamil Nadu. The new College has started functioning at TNJFU campus, Nagapattinam with 20 B.F.Sc students for the academic year 2017-18.

According to the G.O(Ms.)No.184 dt.21.09.2017 of the Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries (FS4) Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, Rs.1644.93 lakh has been allotted for the first-year establishment of this college with 54 teaching and non-teaching posts (20 regular & 34 contractuals) under different cadres. The proposed college will have seven departments viz., Aquaculture, Aquatic Environment Management, Fisheries Biology and Resource Management, Fisheries Economics, Extension and Statistics, Fishing Technology and Fisheries Engineering, Fish Pathology and Health Management and Fish Processing Technology.

In addition to the college campus proposed to be established at Thalainayeru, off campus research farm facilities will also be established with 40 acres of land for both fresh water and brackish water aquaculture. Demonstration and training facilities will be established in the proposed farm complex.


THALAINAYERU FROM FISHERIES POINT OF VIEW

  • Thalainayeru is a panchayat town in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu.
  • More than 1000 active shrimp farms in and around the college will be feasible for student’s education to gain the knowledge about culture-based fisheries and enthusiast the students to become an entrepreneur.
  • Muthupet, a nearby place is a biologically important mangrove area and the fishery potential of this area is well known and documented.

OUR OBJECTIVES

  • To impart B.F.Sc. degree education programme
  • To carryout basic and applied research for the benefit of the various sectors of fisheries.
  • Tailor made programmes to meet the need of the trainee sector which includes the fisher folk, weaker
  • sections of the society, women SHGs and the rural youth to develop fisheries / aquaculture entrepreneurship.
