Dr.B.Ahilan, the Dean of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Dr.Jayalalitha Fisheries University, Thoothukudi has a university service of 32 years possessing rich teaching, research, extension and administrative experience. A professor of Aquaculture served as the Dean of Dr. MGR FCRI, Ponneri from 2017 to 2022. He did his Ph.D., dissertation in the breeding and culture of goldfish (Carassius auratus). He has guided 56 Postgraduate students, both M.F.Sc and Ph.D., in the capacity of Chairman / Member.
He has completed over 30 research projects funded by various Central and State government organisations in the areas of culture and breeding of ornamental fishes, fish nutrition and training of fish farmers. He established Nutrition Laboratory and Feed Mill Unit at FC&RI, Thoothukudi during 2015 under NADP funds. He established RAS units for seabass and Aquaponics unit at AFFF, TNJFU, Madhavaram, Chennai during 2018. He has also established a Fish Farm Complex at Dr. MGR FCRI, Ponneri in 2021 under NADP funds.
He has written 16 textbooks, published 113 research articles in reputed journals, 92 papers that have been presented at international/ national conferences and seminars. He has developed nine technologies approved by the University in the field of Aquaculture and Aquariculture. His contributions to the field of ornamental fish culture are recognized and appreciated by the general public and fish farmers of Tamil Nadu. He has developed several ornamental fish culture entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu through his intensive training programmes. He received the “Best Teacher Award” presented by PFGF, Mumbai during 2003 and TANUVAS, Chennai during 2011.
He is also serving as Faculty Dean for Fisheries Science and Dean (Academics) of TNJFU and introduced many academic reformations.
