Awareness Programme on Endangered Marine Species Organised by the FC & RI, Thoothukudi

As part of the National Science Day Celebration, an awareness programme on Endangered Marine Organisms was conducted at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi on 02.03.2018. The programme was organized by the Department of Fisheries Biology and Resource Management. Twenty nine participants including fishermen and students from St. Mary’s College, Thoothukudi attended the awareness programme. Dr.G.Sugumar, Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute, inaugurated the function and delivered the presidential address. In his presidential address, he spoke on the importance and role of every organism is an ecosystem and that how the loss of one of the components would impact the balance of the ecosystem. Further, he stressed that resources belong to the society and it is the responsibility of all of us to conserve the resources for the future generations and for the well being of the Earth.

The NET-FISH, MPEDA Co-ordinator, Dr.Vinoth S Ravindran, Thoothukudi and the Profesor and Head, St. Mary’s College, Dr.Thilaga, delivered felicitation addresses. Earlier, Dr. S.David Kingston, Professor and Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Mr. P.Pavin kumar, Assistant Professor, delivered vote of thanks.

Followed by the inaugural function, detailed lectures were delivered on Need for Conservation of marine organisms, Diversity of marine organisms, endangered marine fishes, endangered shellfishes and molluscs and endangered marine mammals. The participants were taken to the museum and the importance of the endangered marine organisms were explained to them. The programme came to an end with the distribution of certificates by the Dean, Fisheries College and Research Institute. The programme was sponsored by NET-FISH, MPEDA.
