“Coastal clean-up campaign” at Muthu Nagar Beach

The Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, a constituent unit of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, organized the “Coastal clean-up campaign” in order to observe the International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICC) under National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) funding support at Muthu Nagar Beach, Thoothukudi on 25.09.2021 between 6.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. The International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day is observed on the third Saturday of September every year as part of the Global Coastal Clean- Up celebration. The purpose of the clean-up is to encourage people to remove garbage and waste from beaches and waterways, as well as to identify the source of litter and change behaviours that cause pollution in the environment. The present campaign aims to raise awareness among the fishing communities, coastal stakeholders and the general public on the ill-effects of beach litter on the marine environment and to generate baseline data on marine debris for understanding the abundance, distribution and composition of plastics on the beach.

Dr.N.V.Sujathkumar, Dean (i/c), welcomed the gathering and spoke about the need of environmental cleaning and the increasing garbage in coastal areas during the inaugural campaign. Beach visitors should be aware of the dangers of polluting the marine environment, which will result in a significant reduction in the life of marine organisms.

Mr.Srutan Jai Narayanan, IAS, Sub-Collector, Thoothukudi district, launched the campaign and gave the inaugural address, emphasising the necessity of cleaning coastal regions by collecting various types of debris, which will help to clean the nation as a whole. Furthermore, he stated that beach litter is a serious environmental issue all around the world, with plastics accounting for between 61 and 87 percent of it. Coastal litter has a huge impact on the landscape, diminishing recreational opportunities and visitor attraction. In addition to its aesthetic impact, coastal and marine litter may have economic repercussions for maritime activities such as fishing and aquaculture. It could potentially affect the marine environment and ecosystem components.

The Sub-collector has also gathered rubbish, plastics and other items along  with the students and distributed notices to public in order to raise awareness about the coastal clean-up programme. The NSS Coordinator, Mr. M. Muruganantham, gave the vote of thanks.

The campaign was actively participated in by the college staff and students.During the cleaning campaign, a total of 541.495 kg (5096 numbers) of various garbage was collected and disbursed to the Municipal waste godown (plastic: 215.700 kg / metals: 12.3 kg / wood: 184.680 kg /paper: 10.1 kg /cloths: 59.18 kg / rubber: 25.5 kg / Foam plastic: 9.2 kg / others: 0.5 kg).

The entire programme was coordinated by Dr. S. Athithan, Professor & Head and Vice-president Students Association, and Mr. M. Muruganantham, NSS Co-ordinator.

தமிழ்நாடு டாக்டர் ஜெ.ஜெயலலிதா மீன்வளப் பல்கலைக்கழத்தின் ஓர் அங்கமான தூத்துக்குடி மீன்வளக் கல்லூரி மற்றும் ஆராய்ச்சி நிலையம் சார்பாக சர்வதேச கடலோர தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் தினத்தை முன்னிட்டு சென்னையில் உள்ள தேசிய கடலோர ஆராய்ச்சி மையத்தின் நிதியுதிவியுடன் கடலோர தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் முகாம் தூத்துக்குடியிலுள்ள முத்து நகர் கடற்கரையில் 25.09.2021 அன்று காலை 6.30 மணி முதல் 9.00 மணி வரை நடத்தப்பட்டது. சர்வதேச கடலோர தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் தினம் ஒவ்வொரு ஆண்டின் செப்டம்பர் மாதம் மூன்றாவது சனிக்கிழமையில் கொண்டாடப்படும். சுற்றுச் சூழலை மாசுபடுத்தும் குப்பைகள் மற்றும் கழிவுகளை கடற்கரை மற்றும் நீர்நிலைகளில் அகற்றுவதின் முக்கியத்துவம் குறித்து மக்களிடம் விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்துவதே இத்தினத்தின் நோக்கமாகும். மீனவ சமுதாயம்ரூபவ் கடலோர மக்கள் மற்றும் பொது மக்களுக்கு கடற்கரையில் உள்ள குப்பைகளினால் கடல் மற்றும் கடல் சார்ந்த பகுதிகளுக்கு ஏற்படும் மோசமான விளைவுகள் குறித்து விழிப்புணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தவும் கடற்கரை குப்பைகளை அளவுரூபவ் பரவல்ரூபவ் ஆதிக்கம் மற்றும் கலவை பற்றிய அடிப்படை தகவல்களை சேகரிப்பதும் இப்பிரச்சாரத்தின் முக்கிய நோக்கமாகும்.

முகாமிற்கு வந்த அனைவரையும் தூத்துக்குடி மீன்வளக் கல்லூரி மற்றும் ஆராய்ச்சி நிலையத்தின் முதல்வர் முனைவர் ந.வ.சுஜாத்குமார் அவர்கள் வரவேற்று பேசுகையில் சுற்றுச்சூழல் தூய்மை மற்றும் கடலோர பகுதிகளில்; உள்ள குப்பைகளை அகற்றுவதின் தேவை மற்றும் முக்கியத்துவம் குறித்து பேசினார். திரு. சுருதன் ஜெய் நாராயணன்ரூபவ் தூத்துக்குடி மாவட்ட துணை ஆட்சியர் அவர்கள் முகாமை துவக்கி வைத்து கடலோர பகுதிகளில் உள்ள பல்வகையான குப்பைகளை அகற்றுவதால் ஏற்படும் நன்மைகளை குறித்து எடுத்துரைத்தார். சுற்றுச்சூழலை பாதிக்கும் கடற்கரை கழிவுகளில் நெகிழி 61 முதல் 87 சதவிகிதம் வரை இருக்கிறது என்று தெரிவித்ததோடு மீன்பிடிப்பு மற்றும் மீன்வளர்ப்பை பாதிக்கிறது என்று கூறினார். துணை ஆட்சியர் மாணவர்களோடு சேர்நது கடற்கரையில் உள்ள குப்பைகளை அகற்றும் பணியில் ஈடுபட்டார்.

கடலோர தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் விழிப்புணர்வு குறித்த பிரச்சுரத்தை மாவட்ட துணை ஆட்சியர் விநியோகித்தார். சர்வதேச கடலோர தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் தினத்தை முன்னிட்டு அனைவரும் உறுதிமொழி எடுத்தனர். திரு.மு.முருகானந்தம்ரூபவ் நாட்டு நலப்பணித்திட்ட ஒருங்கினைப்பாளர் அவர்கள் நன்றியுரையாற்றினார். அனைத்து அலுவலர்கள், பணியாளர்கள் மற்றும் கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள் இம்முகாமை கலந்து கொண்டு சிறப்பித்தனர்.

இந்த தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் முகாமில் 541.49 கி.கி அளவுள்ள பல்வேறு விதமான கழிவுபொருள்கள் (நெகிழி: 215.700 கி.கி / உலோகம் : 12.3 கி.கி /மரம் : 184.680 கி.கி / காகிதம் : 10.1 கி.கி / துணிகள் : 59.18 கி.கி / இரப்பர் : 25.5 கி.கி / நுரை நெகிழி : 9.2 கி.கி / மற்றவை: 0.5 கி.கி).

சேகரிக்கப்பட்ட நகராட்சி குப்பைகிடங்கிற்கு அனுப்பி வைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. முனைவர் சா.ஆதித்தன்ர பேராசிரியர் மற்றும் தலைவர் மீன்வளர்ப்புத் துறை மற்றும் திரு.மு.முருகானந்தம் நாட்டு நலப்பனித்திட்ட அலுவலர்; ஒருங்கிணைத்து நடத்தினர்.
