Training Programme on Skill upgradation on Vannamei shrimp farming practices inauguratedon 05.02.2024 at Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi

Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, a Constituent college of Tamil
Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, organized a three days training programme on
Skill upgradation on Vannamei shrimp farming practices” for the benefit of scheduled
community under the project on “Demonstration on advanced aquaculture and fisheries
technologies for augmenting the production and livelihoods of Scheduled Caste fisherfolk of
southern coastal Districts of Tamil Nadu” with the funding support of Central Institute of
Fisheries Education, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR – CIFT) – as Scheduler Caste
– (SC – SP) sub plan component for Technology dissemination. A total of 25 scheduled caste
community beneficiaries from the rural area of Thoothukudi attended the training programme.
This programme was organized by the Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and
Statistics of this institute. The inaugural function was organized on 05.02.2024.
Mr.R.K.SureshRamalingam, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, Tirunelveli
Cluster,highlighted on the schemes and training offered by NABARD for the development of
coastal Fisherfolk during the inaugural session. Dr. B.Ahilan, Dean presided over the function.
He emphasized the need of shrimp farming at coastal areas and the skill requirement for
labourers of shrimp farms for the successful crop. The farmers / entrepreneurs have to
establish their own units after attending similar kind of skill development training programme.
Dr.N.V.Sujathkumar, Professor and Head, Department of Fisheries Extension, Economics and
Statistics welcomed the gathering. During the training programme,the site selection, pond
preparation, equipments and machineries used in shrimp farming, seed selection and stocking
of shrimps, feed and water quality and diseases management will bedemonstrated for the
benefit of trainees. Dr. G. Arul Oli, Assistant Professor and Project PI organized and the training
programme and proposed vote of thanks.
