Department of Aquaculture, Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi
organized two days training on “Freshwater Ornamental Fish Farming for Livelihood
Improvement of Women” from February 12-13, 2024 funded by Department of Scientific and
Industrial Research (DSIR) under the scheme on “Livelihood improvement of women through
skill development in ornamental fish farming with special emphasis on production of attractive
and high quality ornamental fishes” at Trichy Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture, Trichy. The
aim of this training programme is to provide skill based training in ornamental fish culture which
will pave way for self-employment of the trainees by starting their own farming practices. A
total of 24 trainees from various places of Trichy attended the programme. During this
programme, details about commercially important ornamental fishes, their breeding behaviour,
feeding, water quality and disease management, packaging and transportation of fishes and
economics of ornamental farming were explained to participants. The participants were also
taken on an exposure visit so as to gain hands on knowledge in Ornamental Fish Culture and
learn the onsite practices followed in ornamental fish farm. Dr. C. Judith Betsy, Assistant
Professor organized and coordinated the training programme.
