COASTAL CLEANUP PROGRAMME HELD AT MUTHUNAGAR BEACH IN CONNECTION WITH WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2024 ORGANIZED BY FISHERIES COLLEGE AND RESEARCH INSTITUTE, THOOTHUKUDI ON 05.06.2024

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 th June to create awareness among the public and action for the protection of the environment. The theme of World Environment Day for the year 2024 is “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience”. In this connection, Department of Aquatic Environment Management and NSS unit of Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, Rotary Club Tuticorin, We can Trust and Thoothukudi City Municipal Corporation jointly organized “Coastal Cleanup Programme” at Muthu Nagar Beach, Thoothukudi on 05.06.2024. In this programme, Dr.B.Ahilan, Dean inaugurated the cleanup drive
programme and in his inaugural address highlighted the ways and needs to control plastic usage in day to day life and World Environment Day pledge was also observed. Faculties and 60 UG students from Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi, Thoothukudi Corporation Sanitary Officer, Mr.Hari and his team, Members of We Can Trust Mr.Christoper and Rotary Club Tuticorin President Rtn.Mohamed Ibrahim were also actively involved and collected plastic waste such as single use plastics, fishing nets, thermocol, bottles and other anthropogenic litters at Muthu Nagar Beach. The collected plastic wastes were properly segregated and disposed into truck with the help of Thoothukudi City Municipal Corporation for further process. Dr.V.Rani, Professor and Head, Dr.D.Manimekalai, Dr.A.Juliet Selvarani, Assistant Professors of the Department of Aquatic Environment Management and Mr.K.Karuppasamy, NSS Officer in charge Assistant Professor coordinated this programme.
