MoU signed between Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University and ICAR-Central Island Agriculture Research Institute, Port Blair

The Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalaithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) signed a MoU with the ICAR-Central Island Agriculture Research Institute (CIARI), Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands on 23.10.2018 at CIARI campus by the Director of Research, Prof. G. Jeyasekaran for TNJFU, and the Director, Dr. A. Kundu for CIARI in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. S. Felix, and Heads of Divisions, Dr. Jai Sunder, and Scientists of Fisheries Division of CIARI. The ICAR-CIARI has been doing research works for the island farmers to provide decent livelihood through technological intervention. The major mandate of the institute is to provide a research base to improve the productivity of important agriculture, horticulture, livestock and fishery sector of Andaman & Nicobar Islands through adoptive, basic and strategic research. Due to the impact of the climate change in the islands and changing scenario of the agriculture practices, the CIARI is now focusing their works by making self sufficiency through enhancing the productivity without disturbing the fragile ecosystem. This MOU shall facilitate the students’ training and post-graduate research as well as staff research under collaborative and joint mode between both the Institutes. During the function, Dr. Kiruba Shankar of CIARI presented the activities of CIARI particularly pertaining to fisheries division. The activities of TNJFU were presented by the Director of Research. The importance of MoU was highlighted by the Vice-Chancellor of TNJFU as well as the Director of CIARI. The Vice- Chancellor and the Director of Research have also visited the facilities of Andaman Centre of National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), and the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) on the afternoon of 23.10.2018. On 24.10.2018, the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Research visited the Andaman Campus of Pondicherry University and held discussion with the Campus Head. Later, the Vice- Chancellor and the Director of Research visited the Administrative Headquarters of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and met the Chief Secretary to the Island Administration, Principal Secretary for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries, Principal Secretary for Education, and the Director of Fisheries, in connection with the development of fisheries and aquaculture in Anadaman & Nicobar Islands.
