In 2013, this section was raised to the Department of Fish Pathology and Health Management by the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University.
The Department in 2013 came as a Nodal Centre for the Network of National Surveillance Programme on Aquatic Animal Diseases Coordinated by NBFGR, Lucknow, ICAR funded by NFDB, Hyderabad
NFDB has sanctioned Aquatic Animal Health and Environment Management Laboratory in 2016 under the Department of Fish Pathology and Health Management.
This was further strengthened by National Agricultural Development Programme (2017) to include state level fish disease surveillance network in Tamil Nadu.
It was raised to the status of the University Referral Laboratory in 2017. Faculty serving in the department has undergone international training in UK and US apart from visiting several countries on official assignments.
