Students are prepared for diverse roles including Fishing Boat Deckhand, Fishing Boat Seaman, Fishing Boat Driver, Fishing Boat Mechanic, Deep Sea Fisher, Fishing Gear Technician, Bosun, and Skipper. By integrating comprehensive classroom instruction with intensive practical training, the curriculum ensures that graduates are industry-ready from day one, possessing both technical expertise and hands-on experience.

Mission

To achieve excellence in vocational education, research, and training by developing field-level experts in the domains of fishing and fish processing.

Objectives

  • Impart skill-based vocational education in Fishing Technology, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Marine Electronics, and Communication.
  • Conduct applied research in frontier areas of Fishing Technology and bridge existing research gaps.

PPIIFT is equipped with five laboratories:

  1. Fishing Gear Technology Laboratory
  2. Fishing Craft Technology Laboratory
  3. Nautical and Marine Communication Laboratory
  4. Marine Engineering Laboratory
  5. Basic Science Laboratory

Additional essential facilities include: Marine Engine Workshop, Navigational Chart Reading Hall, Classrooms with audio-visual aids and internet access, SMART Classroom for online instruction, Library, Examination Hall, Conference Hall, Educational Technology cum Placement Cell, and Administrative Offices.

Established in 2019 with financial assistance under the NADP scheme, Government of India, titled “Establishment of Fisheries Training Institute at Mandapam”, the institute had a total project outlay of ₹4.5 Crore. The first batch of B.Voc. (IFT) commenced on 30.09.2019, with an annual intake capacity of 20 students, duly approved by the UGC.

Fishing Gear Technology Laboratory Fishing Craft Technology Laboratory Nautical and Marine Communication Laboratory Marine Engine Workshop Basic Fisheries Science Laboratory
The Fishing Gear Technology (FGT) Laboratory has been established with a total area of 21’ x 20’ to facilitate the demonstration of fishing gears for students and fishermen, as well as to support research activities of postgraduate students. The Fishing Craft Technology (FCT) Laboratory has been established with a total area of 21’ x 20’ to facilitate the demonstration of fishing craft models for both students and fishermen. The Nautical and Marine Communication Laboratory has been established with a total area of 21’ x 20’ to equip students with practical skills in navigation, communication, and electronic systems used onboard fishing vessels. The laboratory also provides hands-on training in the operation of radar, GPS, echo sounders, VHF/HF communication equipment, and chart reading. The Marine Engine Workshop has been established with a total area of 1,500 sq. ft. to train students in the engine-side operations of fishing vessels, including the installation, maintenance, and repair of marine engines.

The workshop also provides practical training for Marine Engine Fitters, following professional standards similar to those of CIFNET, Cochin.
To provide foundational knowledge in fish biology, ecology, post-harvest handling, and quality assessment.

• Supports training in fish identification, preservation techniques, and analysis of biological and chemical parameters.

Facilitates research and innovation in sustainable fishing practices and fish processing technologies.

Marine Engine Workshop

Fishing vessels typically comprise two operational sections:

  • the deck-side crew, headed by a Vessel Navigator, and
  • the engine-side crew, headed by an Engine Driver.

The institute’s infrastructure focuses primarily on training deck-side personnel, including Vessel Navigators (Mate Fishing Vessels) and deck crew. To expand training capabilities, the Marine Engine Workshop was established at Ariyaman Beach, Ramanathapuram, with a total budget of Rs.1.2 crore support from the NADP, Government of India, in 2022.

This facility serves as a core infrastructure unit to impart training for engine-side crew, particularly through programmes such as “Marine Engine Fitter”, modelled on CIFNET, Cochin. In addition, the workshop provides engine repair and maintenance services to the fishermen of Tamil Nadu, thereby extending technical support to the fishing community while enhancing hands-on training opportunities for students.

MFV KAYAL Fishing Vessel

The MFV KAYAL, a 22.7-meter Research-cum-Training Vessel (Longlining-cum-Gill Netting), has been constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi, under a Government of Tamil Nadu–funded scheme. The vessel facilitates onboard practical training and demonstrations in Deep Sea Longlining, Deep Sea Gill Netting, Marine Communication, Seamanship, and Navigation for students of the B.Voc. (Industrial Fishing Technology) programme, from first to third year, across various skill-based course components.
