Facilitates research and innovation in sustainable fishing practices and fish processing technologies. |
Fishing vessels typically comprise two operational sections:
The institute’s infrastructure focuses primarily on training deck-side personnel, including Vessel Navigators (Mate Fishing Vessels) and deck crew. To expand training capabilities, the Marine Engine Workshop was established at Ariyaman Beach, Ramanathapuram, with a total budget of Rs.1.2 crore support from the NADP, Government of India, in 2022.
This facility serves as a core infrastructure unit to impart training for engine-side crew, particularly through programmes such as “Marine Engine Fitter”, modelled on CIFNET, Cochin. In addition, the workshop provides engine repair and maintenance services to the fishermen of Tamil Nadu, thereby extending technical support to the fishing community while enhancing hands-on training opportunities for students.
The MFV KAYAL, a 22.7-meter Research-cum-Training Vessel (Longlining-cum-Gill Netting), has been constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kochi, under a Government of Tamil Nadu–funded scheme. The vessel facilitates onboard practical training and demonstrations in Deep Sea Longlining, Deep Sea Gill Netting, Marine Communication, Seamanship, and Navigation for students of the B.Voc.
