Establishment, Objects, and Powers and Functions of the University Statutes and Regulations: Provide list of Statutes and Regulations published in the gazette notification and being implemented by the University for Administration and planning. The following are the list of Statutes and Regulations of the University published in the gazette and being implemented by the University (Annexure 1).

PROFILE OF THE UNIVERSITY

Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) is a State funded University which offers professional fisheries education, research and extension programmes to enhance fish production and utilization by following the State Agricultural University (SAU) pattern and syllabi.

“Harnessing the Science of Fisheries for Food, Nutrition and Livelihood”

TNJFU is established with the following objectives

  • To impart quality professional education in different branches of Fisheries Sciences as the University may determine.
  • To conduct organized research in frontier areas with the objective of developing cutting edge technologies in Fisheries Sciences.
  • To provide extension services like training, consultancy, project formulation to fish farmers, fisherfolk, unemployed youth and entrepreneurs in Fisheries Sciences.
  • To facilitate comprehensive development of Fisheries Sciences for increased contribution to State economy and set benchmark standards through appropriate interventions in fisheries teaching, research and extension.
  • To generate baseline data on aquatic biodiversity and fisheries resource potential.
  • To generate high quality professionals in Fisheries Sciences by following Veterinary Council of India regulations as a model.
  • To create better opportunities for marketing and value addition of fish and fishery products.
  • To set up an aquatic disease diagnosis and surveillance system in the State.

Organizational Setup

Powers and functions of University The powers and functions of the University shall be

  • (a) to provide for instruction and training in fisheries.
  • (b) to provide for instruction and training in fisheries and dissemination of knowledge in fisheries..
  • (c) to provide for dissemination of the findings of research and technical information through extension education;
  • (d) to institute degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions in fisheries.
  • (e) to hold examinations and confer degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions on persons who have
    • (i) pursued a prescribed course of study; or
    • (ii) carried out research in the University under the prescribed conditions;
  • (f) to confer honorary degrees or other distinctions in the prescribed manner and under the prescribed conditions;
  • (g) to provide for lectures and instructions for field workers, fish farmers and other persons not enrolled as regular students of the University and to grant certificates to them, if necessary;
  • (h) to cooperate with other Universities and authorities in such manner and for such purposes as it may determine.
  • (i) to establish and maintain colleges, relating to fisheries.
  • (k) to establish and maintain laboratories, libraries, research stations and museums for teaching, research and extension education;
  • (l) to institute teaching, research and extension education posts and to appoint persons to such posts.
  • (m) to create administrative and other posts and to appoint persons to such posts;
  • (n) to institute and award fellowships, scholarships and prizes in accordance with the statues;
  • (o) to establish and maintain or recognize hostels for students of the University and residential accommodation for the staff of the University;
  • (p) to fix, demand and receive such fees and other charges as may be prescribed
  • (q) to supervise and control hostels and to regulate discipline of the students of the University and to make arrangements for promoting their health and welfare; and
  • (r) to do all such acts and thing, whether incidental to the powers and functions aforesaid or not, as may be necessary or desirable to further the objects of the University.

The University is providing financial support to the students in the form of scholarships and fellowships for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Students' amenities such as gymnasiums, indoor and outdoor game facilities, hostels and many other student-friendly facilities such as computer, internet and e-learning facilities and student placement cells are available in university colleges to promote students' interests in acquiring knowledge on various aspects of fisheries science as well as in finding a right placement for them.

CONSTITUENT COLLEGES/INSTITUTES OFFERING UG & PG DEGREE PROGRAMMES

1. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thoothukudi

The Fisheries College and Research Institute (FC&RI), Thoothukudi is the country's second oldest college, offering professional degree programmes such as B.F.Sc., M.F.Sc. and Ph.D. Since 1977, this institute is functioning in Thoothukudi. The FC&RI has eight departments and a well-established Digitized Library and offers M.F.Sc. and Ph.D., degree programmes in eight disciplines. The campus provides separate hostel facilities for boys and girls with fully secured Wi-Fi connectivity.

2. Dr. M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Ponneri, Thiruvallur

Dr. MGR Fisheries College and Research Institute was established in 2012 at Ponneri campus, near Chennai. It has seven departments and well established library and offers B.F.Sc. degree programme from the academic year 2014-15 and M.F.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programmes in five disciplines from the academic year 2016-17. This Institute has two satellite centres located at Madhavaram and Pulicat, Thiruvallur District that provide adequate support for academic and research activities.

3. Dr. M.G.R. Fisheries College and Research Institute, Thalainayeru, Oradiayampulam

Dr MGR Fisheries College and Research Institute was established in Oradiyampulam, Thalainayeru during 2017. This institute has seven departments and a Library, offers B.F.Sc., degree programme from the academic year 2017-18.

4. College of Fisheries Engineering, Nagapattinam

The College of Fisheries Engineering located in Nagapattinam campus which has six departments and offers a four-year B.Tech. professional degree programme (Fisheries Engineering) from the academic year 2015–16. This institute also offers M.Tech. programme in two disciplines. The institution's infrastructure facilities, including student hostels, are established at the main campus of Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University, Panangudi village, Nagore, on the ECR between Nagapattinam and Karaikal. This institute also offers B.Tech. (Energy and Environmental Engineering) from the academic year 2019- 20 onwards under self-supporting mode.

5. Institute of Fisheries Biotechnology, Vaniyanchavadi, OMR, Chennai

Institute of Fisheries Biotechnology (IFB), located in Vaniyanchavadi, was established during 2017. It offers B.Tech. (Biotechnology) degree programme based on the ICAR common syllabus from the academic year 2017-18 under self-supporting mode.

6. Institute of Fisheries Postgraduate Studies, Vaniyanchavadi, OMR, Chennai

The Institute of Fisheries Postgraduate Studies (IFPGS), located in Vaniyanchavadi, was established in 2017. This institute offers M.F.Sc., degree progammes in four disciplines and Ph.D. (Fish Biotechnology) from the academic year 2017-18 and Ph.D. (Life Sciences) from 2018-19.

7. TNJFU Business School (Fisheries), Vaniyanchavadi, OMR, Chennai

TNJFU Business School (Fisheries), located in Vaniyanchavadi, was established during 2017. This Business School offers M.B.A. (Fisheries Enterprises Management) from 2017 and B.B.A (Fisheries Business Management) from the academic year 2019-20 onwards.

8. College of Fish Nutrition and Food Technology, Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai

The College of Fish Nutrition and Food Technology located in Madhavaram, Chennai was founded in 2018. This institute offers a four year professional degree programme in B.Tech. (Food Technology) from the academic year 2018-19 through self-supporting mode.

9. Paraprofessional Institute of Fisheries Technology, Royapuram, Chennai

Founded in 2018, this Paraprofessional institute offers three years of Bachelor of Vocational (B.Voc.) degree programme (Industrial Fish Processing Technology) from the academic year 2018-19.

10. Paraprofessional Institute of Aquaculture Technology, Muttukadu, Chennai

This paraprofessional institute established in 2019 offers three year vocational degree programme B.Voc. (Industrial Aquaculture) from the academic year 2019-20.

11. Paraprofessional Institute of Fishing Technology, Mandapam, Ramanathapuram

Founded in 2018, this Paraprofessional institute offers three years of Bachelor of Vocational (B.Voc.) degree programme (Industrial Fishing Technology) from the academic year 2018-19.

12. State Referral Laboratory of Aquatic Animal Health, Madhavaram Milk Colony, Chennai

Established in 2018, the State Referral laboratory of Aquatic Animal Health offers three year vocational degree programme B.Voc. (Aquatic Animal Health Management) from the academic year 2019-20.
